The Mystic Archives of Dantalian (ダンタリアンの書架 Dantalian no Shoka) or Bibliotheca Mystica de Dantalian is an anime produced by studio Gainax, under the direction of Yutaka Uemura, and broadcasted originally by TV Tokyo in 2011, based on the light novel of the same name, written by Gakuto Mikumo. Other TV stations that aired the anime around the same time were TV Aichi, TV Osaka, TV Setouchi and TVQ Kyushu. It was distributed on Internet by Bandai Channel and AT-X. The series is also available, with English subtitles, on media websites Crunchyroll, NicoNico and Animax UK. Funimation has licensed the series for North America for the release of DVDs.

The anime has 12 episodes and 1 OVA, released in 2012 as cross-promotion with the release of The Mystic Archives of Dantalian manga, volume 5. Compared to the manga, this adaptation is more faithful to the original source. As seen in the light novel, the chapters are named with an episode name, indicating its position in the series chronology.

Synopsis

The story takes place in England after World War I. Hugh Anthony Disward inherits an old mansion and a personal library from his grandfather. In the basement of the mansion, he meets a mysterious girl, Dalian. She is the gateway to The Mystic Archives of Dantalian, which stores the prohibited books of the demons, the Phantom Books.

These objects endanger the balance of the world, but people are fascinated by the taboo. Hugh and Dalian solve the cases with their ability to access the Labyrinth Library and summon the powers of the Phantom Books to their advantage.
